With the construction of a multifunctional skate park on the property of the SOS Children's Village Kigali, a place has been created for kids and teenagers of the capital of Rwanda, where they have the opportunity to spend their leisure time in a safe environment.
The skate park, which was opened in April 2016, is used primarily by the kids of the elementary school of the SOS Children's Village with 650 students. 75 girls and boys from the children's village and the neighborhood visit the SOS kindergarten. But kids and teenagers, who have no relation to the SOS Children's Village, can use the skate park too. They are introduced to skateboarding by skate-aid volunteers and can regularly participate in skateboarding workshops. skate-aid also provides the skate equipment needed, such as skateboards, safety gear, helmets and hardware, which the children can borrow on site.
The skate park has created a meeting place for the kids, who can enjoy themselves and learn from each other. Origin, religion or skin color no longer matter. What counts more, is the kids’ own motivation to outgrow themselves, their team spirit and their enthusiasm for skateboarding. Currently we always send 2 volunteers to the project. One volunteer comes directly via skate-aid, another volunteer comes through our cooperation with "Eine Welt Netz NRW" and their program "Weltwärts".
This project was started by skate-aid e.V. Munich in 2016. It has been continued by skate-aid international e.V. since May 2019.
