First Impressions: Sven Grobauer (International Volunteer, Namibia)

My name is Sven Grobauer and I’m 25-year-old skateboarder from Frankfurt, Germany. For the next three months, I’ll be volunteering in Namibia to support skate-aid’s mission and vision in Windhoek. Before the trip, I had many questions about what to expect:  culture, weather, and people might have animpact me and how I could positively affect the kids we skate with. Gabu picked me up at the airport and brought me to my accommodation at the hostel. After settling in and taking a short break, we immediately visited the skatepark, where I met Alice (the school principal), Gordon (the local coach) and some of the kids. The skatepark itself is quite rough—very different from those in Germany—but one thing is for sure: it’s a lot of fun! The kids greeted me warmly and, without hesitation, shared their enthusiasm for skating, which is what truly matters to them. After a full day of incredible impressions, I had a good night’s sleep. The following day, Gabu took me on an unforgettable road trip to experience Namibia’s beauty. We traveled through the desert and camped at Spitzkoppe, where I witnessed one of the most breathtaking sunsets of my life. The next day, we headed to Swakopmund, where I met some of Gabu’s friends and local skaters. In the evening, we gathered at Fabiano’s ranch for a barbecue. Located in the middle of nowhere, it was an amazing evening. We even skated Fabiano’s thrashed quarterpipe, which was a little bit sketchy, but the session was great. I couldn’t have imagined a better first weekend. I explored hundreds of kilometers of Namibia, enjoyed skating with locals, and experienced firsthand that kids—no matter where they are in the world—just want to have fun….and fun with skateboarding. All my initial questions and doubts were answered in the most positive way within my first weekend here. I’m excited for what lies ahead!
